Fernando Mendoza is AP player of the year after leading Indiana to 13-0 record and top seed in CFP

Fernando Mendoza was named Associated Press player of the year on Thursday after leading unbeaten andtop-ranked Indianato its firstBig Ten championshipsince 1967 and theNo. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.

The redshirt junior quarterback was the overwhelming choice over fellow Heisman Trophy finalists Diego Pavia of Vanderbilt, Jeremiah Love of Notre Dame and Julian Sayin of Ohio State. Mendoza received 32 of 51 first-place votes from a nationwide panel of media members who cover college football. Pavia got nine to lead the rest of the group, which also included Jacob Rodriguez of Texas Tech.

"I'm shining now but only because there are so many stars around me," Mendoza said, describing his rise from lightly recruited high school prospect in 2021 to a candidate for the sport's most prestigious awards. "There's an analogy that the only reason we're able to see stars in the sky is because the light reflects from all different types of stars. I have so many stars around myself — whether it's my teammates, my coaches, my family, support staff — that I'm able to shine now in this light, and I'm so happy for everyone to be a part of this."

Mendoza, the Hoosiers' first-year starter after transferring from California, is the triggerman for an offense that has surpassed program records for touchdowns and points set during last season's surprise run to the CFP.

Mendoza has thrown for a Bowl Subdivision-leading 33 touchdowns and run for six, giving him a school-record 39 TDs accounted for.

He was the first Big Ten quarterback since 2000 with three straight games with at least four TD passes and no interceptions. His 21-of-23, 267-yard, five-touchdown passing day in a63-10 win at Illinoisin the conference opener established him as a serious contender for national honors.

Mendoza is among 10 FBS quarterbacks who have completed better than 70% of their passes. He ranks among the most accurate passers on attempts of at least 20 yards, hitting on 23 of 43 (53.5%), and when under pressure (52.1%), according to Pro Football Focus.

Ranked the No. 72 quarterback prospect by ESPN when he was a senior at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Mendoza was pledged to Yale for almost six months before he decommitted and signed with California.

He sat out as a redshirt in 2022 and won the starting job for the final eight games in 2023. He was 10th in the nation in passing in 2024 and ranked among the top transfer prospects after the season. He landed at Indiana, where his brother Alberto Mendoza was the No. 3 quarterback last year. This year Alberto is the top backup to his big brother.

Grizzlies' Zach Edey likely out at least a month with his latest ankle injury

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Zach Edey is expected to miss at least a month due to the latest ankle injury for the Memphis Grizzlies center.

The Grizzlies said Thursday that Edey had been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left ankle. The team said he would be evaluated again in about four weeks after a period of rest and rehabilitation and that a full recovery was expected.

Edey had surgery on his left ankle last June, after he was voted to the All-Rookie first team. He missed the first 13 games of this season while recovering before making his season debut Nov. 15 and playing in the last 11.

Edey is averaging 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds.

The 7-foot-3 Edey was the two-time national player of the year at Purdue. He missed 12 games early in his rookie season because of a sprained left ankle before going on to play in 66 games.

The Gist

  • Kylie Kelce has something to say about both her brother-in-law Travis Kelce's claims he's never had an argument with fiancée Taylor Swift and George Clooney's claims that he's never had an argument with wife Amal Clooney.

  • Kylie broke it down on the December 11 episode of her podcast "Not Gonna Lie."

  • Keeping it real as ever, Kylie clarified that she and husband Jason "absolutely argue."

Famously outspokenKylie Kelcehas something to say to brother-in-lawTravis Kelce's claims that, after over two years together, he and fiancéeTaylor Swifthave never had an argument.

On the December 11 episode of Kylie's"Not Gonna Lie" podcast, the host said of her own marriage of seven years toJason Kelce, "We absolutely argue."

Getty Jason Kelce and Kylie Kelce at the Super Bowl on February 6, 2025

It all started on the podcast Travis and Jason co-host, "New Heights," when guestGeorge Clooneyreiterated—as he has said in interviews before—that he and his wife of 11 years,Amal Clooney, never argue.

"Neither of us is gonna win the argument, so why get in?" Clooney said on the December 3 episode of "New Heights." "Dude, I'm 64 years old. And what am I gonna argue about at this point? You know? I've met this incredible woman that is—she's beautiful and smart, and she stands for all the most important things that I believe in in the world. And I can't believe how lucky I am. So what am I going to fight about?"

To this,Travis respondedof him and Swift, "Well, it's only been two-and-a-half years, and you're right. I haven't gotten into an argument. Never once."

Back to Kylie on Thursday's episode: "Notice how my husband was oddly quiet during this segment," she quipped. "He did ask a couple of clarifying questions. But for the most part, his ass knew that he could not say that after almost eight years married. We absolutely argue."

"Now, do we argue often?" Kylie continued. "Not really. But we've definitely argued, for sure." She added, "Like, to be fair, I'm not a yelling arguer. So the arguments in our house, they're not a yelling situation. I just think that if you're married, you live together, specifically if you have children, you're potentially having some sleepless nights. You might have varying degrees of patience with certain situations with your kids."

Ultimately, the mom of four isn't really buying Travis nor Clooney's assertions that they've never argued with their partners. "You're telling me you don't bicker or argue? Or maybe you do bicker, but you don't argue? I'm very confused about this."

"To George Clooney's credit, I would not argue with Amal either," Kylie said of the human rights attorney. "Absolutely not. I would be right behind her like, 'Yeah. Get them. What she said. I'm with her.' Whatever she says, we ride at dawn."
