Sherrone Moore, fired Dec. 10 as Michigan football coach, remained in an Ann Arbor-area jail late Dec. 11, pending formal criminal charges associated with an assault investigation conducted by the Pittsfield Township Police Department.
Michigan announced Moore's firing in a statement at 4:43 p.m. ET on Dec. 10, minutes after police report that Moore was detained following a 4:10 p.m. call "investigating an alleged assault." Moore was arrested and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail that evening, and remained there as of 11 p.m. Dec. 11, according to jail records.
Criminal charges had not been filed against Moore as of late Dec. 11. According to the Pittsfield Township Police Department, Moore isexpected to be in court for arraignmenton Dec. 12.
In its statement, the university said Moore was fired for cause after an investigation found "credible evidence" that he "engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member."
On Dec. 11, Michigan interim presidentDomenico Grasso addressedthe firing of Moore, 39, in a letter to faculty and students, saying that the coach was "immediately terminated" when his alleged conduct came to light.
"There is absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None," Grasso said. "I have been in close communication with the Board of Regents and we are united in committing to doing what is right."
Grasso said the university's investigation into the allegations is ongoing.
Moore led Michigan to a 17-8 record in his two seasons leading the program, not including a 1-0 record as interim coach in 2023. He is replaced by interim coach Biff Poggi ahead of the 9-3Wolverines' scheduledDec. 31 Citrus Bowl appearanceagainst No. 14 Texas.
