Massey’s go-ahead 2-run homer lifts Royals past Guardians 5-3 for their fifth straight win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Massey hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Isaac Collins also went deep and the Kansas City Royals pushed their winning streak to five with a 5-3 victory over the AL Central-rival Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night.

Stephen Kolek allowed a three-run shot by Rhys Hoskins but little else over six innings in his season debut. The right-hander strained his oblique in his first start of spring training, but Kolek had pitched well in four rehab starts at Triple-A Omaha before the Royals had him make a spot start for Noah Cameron, who's dealing with some lower back tightness.

Nick Mears and Daniel Lynch IV handled a scoreless inning apiece in relief for Kansas City, and Lucas Erceg worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to earn his third save in four games and 10th of the season.

The Guardians' Gavin Williams (5-2) allowed five runs and eight hits with two walks while losing for the first time since March 27, when the Mariners beat him in the second game of the season. Williams had since won five decisions covering six starts.

The Royals jumped to a 2-0 lead on Salvador Perez's single in the first, but the Guardians pulled ahead in the fourth. With two runners aboard, Hoskins sent a 2-1 pitch from Kolek clanking off the left-field foul pole just above the outfield padding for a 3-2 lead.

Massey answered with his two-run homer in the bottom half, though. The 392-foot drive off Williams' 2-2 pitch came moments after Guardians catcher Bo Naylor had challenged a called ball, which would have produced a strikeout had he been successful.

Collins added his homer in the sixth inning, giving him a 3-for-3 night but leaving him a triple short of the cycle.

RHP Tyler Glasnow (back) exits Dodgers' win over Marlins

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow was removed after pitching one inning because of back spasms in the team's 12-2 victory over the host Houston Astros on Wednesday.

Field Level Media

Glasnow allowed a first-inning home run to Brice Matthews and attempted to return in the second. After several warmup pitches, Glasnow, 32, motioned for trainers, who along with manager Dave Roberts removed him from the game with what the Dodgers announced as low back pain. Jack Dreyer (2-1) replaced Glasnow and picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief.

"It's just like a normal spasm that kind of just gives out," the 6-foot-8 Glasnow said after the game. "I've gotten it since like high school, just being tall, I guess. I get it like a couple times a year. It was just a warm-up pitch and it gave out, and I tried to throw another one and it just was too hard to bend over."

Glasnow's first-inning strikeout of Yordan Alvarez was the 1,000th of his career. He is the fastest pitcher in major league history to reach the milestone at 793 innings.

"It's great. It's a cool accomplishment," Glasnow said. "It would have been better if I didn't get taken out of the game (before) the second (inning) ... but I'll be able to look back on it and have a nice feeling about it."

Glasnow said he's not worried about the back issue, saying it "doesn't seem to feel too serious." Roberts took similar tone.

"I don't expect it to be an IL situation," Roberts said. "I think that given that it's something that's recurring and then kind of looking at the history ... it's been more of we push him back a couple days -- two, three days. As I understand it, we're going to get back home, get an MRI, just make sure that's kind of what we see."

A 2024 All-Star with Los Angeles, Glasnow is 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA after his abbreviated seventh start this season. He signed a five-year, $136.5 million contract before the 2024 season.

Late surge leads Knicks past Sixers to 2-0 series edge

Jalen Brunson scored eight of his 26 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday night for the host New York Knicks, who took control of their Eastern Conference semifinal by stopping the Philadelphia 76ers down the stretch to earn a 108-102 win in Game 2.

Field Level Media

The Knicks lead the best-of-seven set series 2-0. Game 3 is scheduled for Friday night in Philadelphia.

"Being down 2-0 after coming back to win in the first round, I think it's more of a challenge," Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. "It was 1-1 after two games (against the Boston Celtics in the first round), right? So it's 2-0. Puts a lot on this next game for sure, but that's OK."

Karl-Anthony Towns produced 20 points and 10 rebounds despite playing just 27 minutes due to foul trouble for the Knicks, who ended the game on a 12-3 run to close out a contest that included 14 ties and 25 lead changes.

OG Anunoby, who exited the game with 2:31 left after hobbling off with a right leg injury, had 24 points while Mikal Bridges added 18 points as New York won its fifth straight game overall. The Knicks' average victory margin in the previous four games was 33.8 points.

"He looked like he was hopping," Knicks coach Mike Brown said of Anunoby. "I have not talked to medical yet."

New York center Mitchell Robinson was a late scratch due to illness.

Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points for the 76ers, who managed just 12 points on 4-of-19 shooting (21.1%) in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia took its final lead at 99-96 on Kelly Oubre Jr.'s 3-pointer with 6:52 left, after which the Sixers hit 1 of 10 from the field with two turnovers.

"At the end of the day, it came down to who was going to get more stops in that fourth quarter," Brown said. "To hold a team like that to 12 points - and they missed some shots, we know that - to have them only score 12 points in that fourth quarter, it's huge."

Oubre and Paul George each finished with 19 points. VJ Edgecombe had 17 points.

Philadelphia big man Joel Embiid missed the game due to ankle and hip injuries.

The 76ers took their biggest lead by opening with a 15-8 run in which George scored 11 points. The Knicks responded with a 10-2 surge to go in front for the first time at 18-17 and begin the seesaw affair in earnest.

The 76ers led 33-31 at the end of the first, 62-61 at the half and 90-89 through three quarters.

"We felt like we should've won it," Edgecombe said. "It came down to shot-making at the end of the game. They were making shots, we (weren't)."

Midway through the fourth quarter, New York's Josh Hart answered the 3-pointer by Oubre with a trey to begin a decisive 9-0 run. The Knicks grabbed their biggest lead to that point at 105-99 on Bridges' 20-footer with 2:56 left.

The teams combined for four consecutive empty trips before Maxey split a pair of free throws with 1:33 left. Brunson answered by making two foul shots before Maxey's layup cut the margin to five. Hart and George traded missed 3-point attempts, after which McBride hit 1 of 2 free throws with 22.1 seconds left.

Maxey missed a 26-footer and Brunson collected the rebound with 12.6 seconds left and dribbled out the clock.

RB Jeremiyah Love has one of the highest-selling rookie jerseys in 2026

TheArizona Cardinalsmade some noise in the NFL draft by selecting running back Jeremiyah Love third overall. He is a special player who will generate some buzz around the Cardinals. That is reflected in rookie jersey sales.

USA TODAY

According to Fanatics, Love's No. 1 draft pick jersey is the seventh-highest selling rookie jersey.

Who is ahead of him?

  1. S Caleb Downs, Dallas Cowboys

  2. LB Jacob Rodriguez, Miami Dolphins

  3. EDGE Malachi Lawrence, Dallas Cowboys

  4. QB Drew Allar, Pittsburgh Steelers

  5. QB Fernando Mendoza, Las Vegas Raiders

  6. CB Chris Johnson, Miami Dolphins

After Love, rounding out the top 10 are OL Clabe Lomu (New England Patriots), S Dillon Thieneman (Chicago Bears) and EDGE David Bailey (New York Jets).

Now, being top offensive players, seeing Mendoza and Love so low, there is an explanation. As neither Mendoza nor Love are expected to wear No. 1, fans of those players and teams likely are holding out for the actual jersey. Love is expected to wear No. 4, which is currently unassigned and is the number Love wore at Notre Dame.

Once that goes on sale, expect Love's jersey to be in the top three or four in rookie jersey sales.

Auburn strengthens national seed hopes with midweek win at UAB

The No. 6Auburn Tigerspicked up another quality win on Tuesday by handling UAB, 10-2, at Regions Field in Birmingham.

USA TODAY

The Tigers (33-14) slowly chipped away at UAB (28-20) by scoring only two runs over the first four innings before taking complete control of the game in the 5th inning. Eric Guevara extended Auburn's lead to 3-0 in the inning that began with a single by Lucas Steele and a walk to Mason McCraine. The surge continued with a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch, with the big blow coming off the bat of Bub Terrell, whose two-RBI single extended Auburn's lead to 7-0 before the dust settled.

Guevara came through in the clutch yet again by smashing a two-run home run in the 8th inning to push Auburn ahead, 9-0, with Brandon McCraine scoring the final run with a two-out single in the inning to score Chris Rembert. Patrick McGlon and Brady Waugh erased the shutout bid with a pair of RBI hits in the bottom frame, but it was far too late to create enough momentum to steal the win away from the visiting Tigers.

Bub Terrell and Brandon McCraine led the charge with three hits each, with Terrell tying Eric Guevara by scoring three RBI. Griffin Graves shut out the Blazers in four innings, where he allowed just three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Abe Chancellor, Marcel Kulik, Jett Johnston, and Garrett Brewer combined to strike out eight batters, walk four, and allow two runs on four hits.

The win adds another "quad 1" win to its resume as UAB entered the contest ranked No. 46 in the NET, which strengthens Auburn's argument to be a national seed in the upcoming NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Tigers have a chance to strengthen their case this weekend with a trip to No. 11 Mississippi State, which is No. 9 in the latest NET rankings. Game one of the series is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. CT in Dudy Noble Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi.
