PWHL issues 1-game suspension and $250 fine against Frost's Curl-Salemme after playoff series opener

AP Hockey Writer (AP) — Frost forward Britta Curl-Salemme has been suspended by the PWHL for one game and fined $250 for two separate plays in Minnesota’s playoff semifinal series opener against Montreal, the league announced on Monday.

Associated Press

Curl-Salemme’s suspension stems from a game misconduct she received for an illegal check to the head on Kaitlin Willoughby in the final minute of the second period ofMinnesota’s 5-4 overtime win on Saturday. The league’s Player Safety Committee determined Curl-Salemme made no attempt to play the puck and raised her forearm to complete the check in deeming the hit to Willoughby’s head being avoidable.

The fine was the result of Curl-Salemme’s altercation with Montreal’s Abby Roque, in which both were penalized for roughing earlier in the second period. The committee determined supplemental discipline was warranted in noting the Frost forward grabbed and pulled Roque’s facial protector in sending the player “to the ice with a degree of violence.”

The Frost are two-time defending Walter Cup champions, and Curl-Salemme will miss Game 2 of the best-of-five series to be played at Montreal on Tuesday. The second-year player finished the regular season third in the league with 29 points, including a PWHL-leading 18 assists.

This is Curl-Salemme's first suspension of the season, though she was fined $250 for a cross-checking penalty in March. Last season, she was issued three separate one-game suspensions, twice for illegal checks to the head, and the other time for high-sticking.

Gage Goncalves nets OT winner, Lightning push Canadiens to Game 7

Gage Goncalves scored the overtime game-winning goal to give the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday and force Game 7 of their Stanley Cup playoff series.

Field Level Media

The deciding game of their Eastern Conference first-round set will be Sunday in Tampa. That clash has quite the affair to top in entertainment value.

A thrilling Game 6 finally came to a close when Goncalves buried a loose puck amidst a scramble at 9:03 of overtime for his first career playoff overtime winner.

It came shortly after the Lightning killed a Montreal power play.

"I liked how we stayed even-keeled the whole game," Goncalves told Sportsnet. "Some calls there. Some calls (were) not (made). A bunch of chances for them and for us throughout the night, but we stayed even-keeled and didn't let it get to us."

Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy had struggled to find his form during this series but delivered his best performance with 30 saves to post his eighth career playoff shutout.

"I've watched him the past few years and you think you've seen the best of it and then he does something like this," Goncalves said of his netminder. "We're pretty happy for him to be on our team."

Montreal goalie Jakub Dobes stopped 32 shots in a fantastic goaltending duel.

All six games have been decided by one goal. Both teams have won twice in overtime.

The series winner will face the Buffalo Sabres in the second round.

"Tons of confidence. We're a confident group," Montreal coach Martin St. Louis said about going to Game 7. "We believe in what we do and how we do it. ... That was probably the best game I've seen this young group play.

" You've just got to embrace the situation. Things are meant to be. I think it was meant to be for our growth to play a Game 7. It's going to help for what's next for us."

The lack of goals was not indicative of the action. Both clubs generated a litany of scoring chances in a back-and-forth clash.

Tampa came within a whisker of scoring first early in the second period when Corey Perry slipped a shot through Dobes' legs, but Phillip Danault pulled the puck off the goal line behind his netminder.

Late in the second period, Vasilevskiy robbed Ivan Demidov with a pair of sprawling saves that had the Montreal forward looking skyward during a Canadiens power play. Danault was also stopped on a partial breakaway in the dying seconds of the frame.

Alexandre Texier, who scored the winning goal in Game 5, rang a shot off the post early in the third period moments before Jake Guentzel was stopped on a breakaway at the other end.

During Tampa's ensuing power play, both Nikita Kucherov and Guentzel struck iron.

Dobes also stood tall during another Lightning third-period power play, capping it with a clutch stop on Brayden Point.

But it was just amazing. People were horrified, they thought, that’s not fashion, she’s just naked at the Metropolitan.”

Former U.S. ice dancer comes forward in Nikolaj Sørensen sexual assault case

The ongoing sexual assault case againstCanadian Olympic ice dancer Nikolaj Sørensenhas a shocking update as the survivor of the assault has come public.

USA TODAY Sports

Ininterviews withBroken IceandUSA TODAY sports columnist Christine Brennan, Ashley Foy, a former United States ice dancer and currently a coach in the Netherlands, said that she "[does not] care what professional retaliation I face anymore. I can't bear to face another person talking about this case to me not knowing I'm the victim."

Foy mentioned that she had originally not wanted to come forward due to experiences her friends suffered. She mentions that her childhood friendBridget Namiotkadied after being bullied for coming forward, while another friend Gabi Papadakis lost her job for a similar reason.

What's the status of Nikolaj Sørensen's ice dancing ban

In 2024, amid the investigation into allegations of sexual assault against a then 22-year-old woman, Sorensen was banned from competing in ice dancing for six years. However, that ban was overturned in June 2025, but that decision is still being argued over by the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada with a final decision yet to be announced.

Sorensen's ice dance partner and girlfriendLaurence Fournier Beaudryhas expressed support for her partner, while Sorensen himself has denied all allegations.

In February 2026, following the release of the Netflix documentary "Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing",USA TODAY reportedthat Foy — still wishing to remain anonymous at the time — was unhappy with the documentary, believing it gave Fournier Beaudry a platform to defend Sorensen and denounce survivors of sexual assault.

Foy said, "The comments by the French team in the press and on a Netflix documentary create a dangerous environment for skaters who need to report abuse. The comments of the reigning Olympic champion and a team in contention for the upcoming Olympic title carry weight, and using their voices to publicly undermine a survivor’s truth further enforces the culture of silence in figure skating."

Did Nikolaj Sørensen compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics?

No. Sorensen remained banned from competing while the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina were going on. Fournier Beaudry was forced to find a different partner in Guillaume Cizeron. The pair won gold, narrowly beating out Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
